Unnecessary Sewing Tools That I LOVE

Sharing a collection of my favorite tools and notions.

We all know sewing is an expensive hobby. And there are lots of ways to make it less so! But this isn’t that post.

Today I’m sharing all of my favorite tools that are definitely not necessary items but will save you soooo much time and effort. Things I have in my artillery that I peronally love.

Some of the below are affiliate links, meaning that I earn from qualifying purchases. It’s a small way you can support me!

Magnetic Seam Gauge

This one has been a true gamechanger for me with sewing straight seams that are an even seam allowance. If your sewing machine has a metal throatplate, it’s an easy addition that will make a world of difference. And a small investment!

Now this one barely belongs on this list; it’s practically a must-have. I use mine way more than my fabric shears these days. It’s so nice not to disturb and move the fabric while you’re cutting it. This one from Havels is extra safe because the blade is only exposed while pushing down and using the cutter.

Rainbow Serger Thread

I love love love this color-changing thread! Plus I’m lazy, so I never change my thread anyway and this kind of matches everything. More color please.

Fabric Clips

I prefer these over my pins! Pins are the default in American sewing and they just don’t always make sense. Why poke holes into your precious fabric if you don’t have to…? Clips are a great alternative and are better for layers of thick fabrics too.

Magnetic Pin Bracelet

Things that just make sense. This is extra handy when making adjustments or draping.

Hot Hemmer

I’ve hemmed enough things sloppily (when it gets all twisty looking and warped, you know?) to know when I need a tool 😂 A hot hemmer is a guide that you can iron over for precise hems and cuffs without the wobbling grain lines. Especially for curved hems!

Loop Turner

I honestly regret how long it took me to give in and buy this. I was hesitant to spend $5 on a metal stick at first. It saves so much time though compared to all the other methods of strap turning. Learn from my cheapness and just do it. Especially if you enjoy littly bitty thin straps.

Walking Foot

This is a sewing machine foot that has feed dogs on top and bottom to help pull the fabric through the machine more easily. It’s a huge help for fabrics that usually have tension issues, like silks or knits. I held off a long time because I was under the impression that walking feet were really expensive, but if you don’t buy the name-brand machine foot for your machine, they’re about half the cost. Make sure to pay attention to whether you have a high or low shank machine and purchase accordingly!

I hope you enjoy all of these tools! Are any of these already favorites in your sewing space?
